One Meal a Day After 45: Why I Modified OMAD for Better Fat Loss
One Meal A Day (OMAD) has become one of the most popular fat-loss strategies in the world.
And for good reason.
For many people, eating one meal per day naturally reduces calories, simplifies nutrition, and can be an effective way to lose body fat.
But after coaching adults over 45 for more than 40 years, I’ve found there can be one major problem with traditional OMAD.
It can be difficult to get enough protein and maintain muscle while eating only one meal per day.
That’s why I often use a modified approach I call OMAD 1.5.
Instead of eating just one meal, OMAD 1.5 consists of one small high-protein meal plus one larger meal later in the day.
This simple modification allows many people to enjoy the benefits of OMAD while making it much easier to hit their protein goals and preserve lean muscle.
When I Use OMAD 1.5
- During business travel
- During vacations
- During maintenance phases
- After higher-calorie weekends
- Anytime I want an easy way to create a lower-calorie day without feeling deprived
One of the biggest mistakes I see adults over 45 make is focusing only on weight loss while ignoring muscle retention.
The goal isn’t simply to lose weight.
The goal is to lose body fat while maintaining as much muscle as possible.
That’s why protein becomes increasingly important as we age.
For many of my clients, a small high-protein meal earlier in the day followed by a larger dinner creates a sustainable structure that fits their lifestyle while helping them stay in control of calories.
Like any nutrition strategy, OMAD isn’t magic.
Calories still matter.
Protein still matters.
Food quality still matters.
But for the right person, OMAD 1.5 can be an effective tool that makes fat loss simpler and easier to maintain over the long term.
This is one of the strategies I teach inside The Over 45 Fit Project™, where I help busy adults lose stubborn body fat, build strength, improve lab work, and create results that last.
