How I Stay Lean at 63 Without Living in the Gym

Most people over 50 believe staying lean requires spending hours in the gym.

I couldn’t disagree more.

As I’m turning 64 this summer, I’ve learned that getting lean—and staying lean—isn’t about doing more. It’s about consistently doing the things that matter most.

If you’ve been struggling to lose weight after 50, simplify your approach before making it more complicated.

1. I Walk…A Lot

Walking is one of the most underrated forms of exercise for adults over 50.

It burns calories, improves cardiovascular health, helps regulate blood sugar, supports recovery, and is something most people can sustain for years.

You don’t have to run marathons to become healthier.

Sometimes the simplest habits produce the biggest results.

2. I Prioritize Protein

Every day I make protein a priority.

Adequate protein helps preserve lean muscle, supports recovery, improves satiety, and makes fat loss much easier.

As we age, maintaining muscle becomes one of the most important things we can do for our long-term health and independence.

3. I Lift Weights…But Not Too Hard

I still strength train.

I simply don’t try to destroy myself every workout.

My goal is to stimulate muscle—not beat up my joints.

Recovery becomes increasingly important as we get older.

Smart training almost always beats excessive training.

4. I Sleep About 8 Hours Per Night

Sleep is one of the most overlooked health habits.

Poor sleep negatively affects hunger, recovery, hormones, energy levels, and even our ability to lose body fat.

For me, quality sleep is part of my training program—not separate from it.

Keep It Simple

Most people over 50 don’t need a harder plan.

They need a simpler one.

Walking consistently.

Prioritizing protein.

Strength training intelligently.

Sleeping enough.

Repeating those habits week after week.

Those fundamentals have helped me stay lean into my 60s, and they’re the same principles I teach my coaching clients.
